Obsidian is volcanic glass, which is why it polishes darker and glossier than any other stone on this list.

Why the bead size matters. A tasbih is counted by feel, not by sight. A bead too small slips past the thumb and the count goes wrong; too large and the strand gets bulky in a pocket. Six to eight millimeters is the range that stays countable without becoming a handful.

  1. Find the thumb position first

    Hold the strand so it hangs over the index finger with the thumb resting on the first bead. Everything after that is one motion.

  2. Push, do not pull

    Move each bead away from you with the thumb rather than dragging the cord. That is what keeps the count reliable when you are not watching.

  3. Let the marker do the counting

    Work to the divider or the head bead and start again. Counting the beads themselves is what breaks concentration.
