Ramadan Kareem

The greeting inside a crescent

Ramadan Kareem cut into a crescent panel in 6 mm MDF with a 1.2 mm gold or silver acrylic face. Three sizes, 30, 45 or 60 cm across.

Three decisions before it ships

  1. Size

Three sizes, 30, 45 or 60 cm across, drawn to scale against a sofa below.

  2. Finish

Two finishes — gold or silver acrylic.

  3. Hanging

Ready to hang, and light enough to stand on a console instead.

Size & scale

Judged on the wall it centers

All three are as tall as they are wide, so the decision is how much wall the crescent should hold. They are drawn below at true scale above a three-seat sofa.

Three-seat sofa · 200 cm (79 in) wide, 82 cm (32 in) high L · 60 × 60 cm 23.6 × 23.6 in M · 45 × 45 cm 17.7 × 17.7 in S · 30 × 30 cm 11.8 × 11.8 in
SizeWidth × height (in)Width × height (cm)Best for
S11.8 × 11.8″30 × 30 cmA console top, a shelf ledge, or a child’s room
M17.7 × 17.7″45 × 45 cmThe wall beside the dining table — the size most chosen
L23.6 × 23.6″60 × 60 cmA main living-room or entry wall, read from across the room

Mark it before you choose. Run painter's tape on the wall to the outer width and height, then stand back to where you normally sit and look at it from there. On a tall piece, hang it with its middle around 150 cm from the floor and the drop does the rest.

Craft

Wood behind, acrylic in front

The greeting and the crescent are cut into a 6 mm MDF board and faced with a 1.2 mm shiny acrylic layer, so the piece has enough depth to survive being packed away each year.

  • Cut and layered, so it packs away and comes back out
  • Cut and layered so the calligraphy sits forward of the panel behind it
  • Wood and acrylic combined, each carrying its own depth and grain
  • Edges finished clean, with no visible fixings on the face

On wood and acrylic. Layering the two materials is what gives the piece its depth: the acrylic carries the line of the calligraphy and the wood behind it gives the panel warmth and weight.

Finishes

The finishes

Two finishes. The gold reads warm against the lamplight of an iftar table; the silver stays cooler and suits a paler room.

Ramadan Kareem lunate wooden wall art in gold

Gold

Warm and bright, and the one that reads best against off-white and cream walls.

Ramadan Kareem lunate wooden wall art in silver

Silver

Cool and quiet, and the easiest to place in a room that already has chrome or glass in it.

Hanging it

One fixing, or no fixing at all

At the smaller sizes a console top works as well as a wall. If it does go up, pencil the mark faintly — it comes down again after Eid.

  1. Find the center of the wall

Mark the center point rather than measuring in from a corner — a layered panel wants to sit centered on the wall it occupies.

  2. Tape the outline first

Painter's tape to the full outline lets you judge the proportion from where you normally sit, before any fixing goes in.

  3. Hang and check the level

Hang it, then step back across the room. A panel with a straight top edge shows a tilt more readily than a cut silhouette does.

  • Ships ready to hang; no frame, glass or backing board to fit
  • Packed with corner protection for transit

Where it goes

Where it goes

The wall behind the iftar table

Where the family gathers through the month, and the reason most of these are bought.

A hallway or entry

The first thing seen on the way in, which is what makes the whole house feel like Ramadan.

A console or a mantel

The smallest size stands as well as it hangs, which suits a surface that already has things on it.

Care

Keeping it as it arrived

Dry cloth only

A soft, dry cloth. Wood and acrylic both mark with abrasives, so nothing scouring.

No solvents

Alcohol and glass cleaner will haze acrylic. If a mark will not lift dry, use a barely damp cloth and dry it at once.

Away from damp and direct sun

Wood moves with humidity and acrylic can warm in direct sunlight, so give it an interior wall out of the midday light.

Choose your size and finish

Three sizes, and the finish is the rest of the decision. Tape the outline on the wall first — it is the only measurement that matters.
