Mabkhara in geometric fretwork

A cut-metal burner for bakhoor and incense

Laser-cut metal in a geometric fretwork, finished in electrostatic powder paint, with a plate across the top for the coal or the cone. Bent into shape it stands 10 × 10 cm on the table and 11.5 cm high, in five colors.

Two decisions before it ships

  1. Finish

Gold, black, white, silver or copper. The cut pattern is the same in all five.

  2. In use

Bakhoor, oud or resin on charcoal, or an incense cone, set on the plate at the top.

Size in the hand

How big is it?

One size: 10 cm across and 11.5 cm high once it is bent into shape. It is drawn below beside a coffee mug at the same scale.

Coffee mug · 9 cm (3.5 in) wide, 10 cm (3.9 in) high One size · 10 × 11.5 cm 3.9 × 4.5 in
SizeWidth × height (in)Width × height (cm)Best for
One size3.9 × 4.5″10 × 11.5 cmA side table, a console or the iftar table

It arrives flat. The body ships as one cut strip, 50.5 × 10 cm, and is bent into its square shape at home, so it travels flat in a small box.

Craft

Cut through, so the light comes out

The fretwork is cut right through the metal, so the glow of a lit coal shows through the pattern and its shadow falls on the surface around it.

  • Laser-cut geometric fretwork on the sides
  • Electrostatic powder paint, in the color shown
  • A flat plate across the top holds the coal or the cone
  • One strip, bent into a square at home

Finishes

Five colors for the same piece

The pattern and the shape are the same in every color; what changes is how it reads in the room.

Geometric fretwork mabkhara in gold

Gold

Warm and festive, and the one that glows most around a lit coal.

Geometric fretwork mabkhara in black

Black

The pattern turns graphic, close to a silhouette, and suits a modern room.

Geometric fretwork mabkhara in white

White

Quiet and light, so the cut pattern is what you notice.

Geometric fretwork mabkhara in silver

Silver

A cool metallic tone that sits well beside glass and gray stone.

Geometric fretwork mabkhara in copper

Copper

A warm, reddish tone that sits well with wood and earthenware.

Using it

Lighting the incense

Set it down where it will stay before you light anything, so the hot part is never carried.

  1. Place it first

A flat, stable surface with clear space above it, before anything is lit.

  2. Light the coal or the cone

Charcoal with bakhoor, oud or resin, or an incense cone on its own, set on the top plate.

  3. Let it cool before moving

Wait until the coal is out and the metal is cool to the touch, then tip out the ash.

  • Never leave burning incense unattended
  • Keep it away from curtains and out of reach of children

Where it lives

Where it ends up

A side table by the sofa

Where guests sit, which is where a scent is meant to reach.

A console by the door

The first thing a guest passes, and a fitting place to welcome them with bakhoor.

The iftar table

Lit once the meal is cleared, while the family is still sitting together.

Care

Keeping it as it arrived

A dry cloth for the metal

Wipe it with a soft, dry cloth. Household cleaners can dull a powder-painted finish.

Clear the ash after each use

Once it is cool, tip out the ash so residue does not build up on the plate.

Let it cool first

Handle it only once the metal is cool to the touch.
