The five prayers, for a child

A prayer schedule a child can move through the day

A prayer schedule a child can move through the day, in 30 × 33 cm.

Four decisions before it ships

  1. What it is

A prayer schedule a child can move through the day. It sits where the child will pass it — a desk, a shelf, the kitchen table.

  2. Size

    Made in 30 × 33 cm.

  3. Finish

Two finishes. The shape is the same in each; what changes is how much it stands out against what is behind it.

  4. In use

It sits where the child will pass it — a desk, a shelf, the kitchen table.

Size on the table

How big is it, really?

One size, 30 × 33 cm — drawn below beside a dining table, at the same scale.

Dining table · 120 cm (47 in) wide, 75 cm (30 in) high One size · 30 × 33 cm 11.8 × 13 in
SizeWidth × height (in)Width × height (cm)Best for
One size11.8 × 13″30 × 33 cmThe only size it is made in

Measured against the table it goes on. The table in the drawing is 120 cm across and 75 cm high, which is a standard dining table — the piece is drawn on it at the same scale, so the footprint it takes is the footprint you see.

Craft

How it is made

Cut from sheet, so the shapes are the material rather than a pattern laid on it.

  • A cut steel body, with the color UV printed straight onto it
  • UV curing sets the ink as it is laid down, so it sits in the surface rather than on top of it
  • The steel does the standing; the print does the reading

On the printing. UV printing cures the ink the instant it lands, which is why the color can go directly onto metal at all. It is the reason a piece handled every day keeps its color instead of wearing pale at the edges.

Finishes

The finishes

Two finishes of the same cut piece.

the five prayers, for a child in boys

Boys

A finish that changes how much the script reflects, and how far forward it sits on the wall.

the five prayers, for a child in girls

Girls

A finish that changes how much the script reflects, and how far forward it sits on the wall.

Using it

Standing it up

It sits where the child will pass it — a desk, a shelf, the kitchen table.

  1. Set it on something that will not flex

Cut sheet is heavier than it looks, and a piece this size wants a fixed shelf or a table rather than a stack of books.

  2. Turn the cut face toward the room

The shapes are cut right through, so the piece reads from the side the light comes from. Turn it until the gaps carry the light.

  3. Leave it room to cast a shadow

A few centimeters off the wall behind it and the cut-through pattern lands on that wall as well — which is half of what a cut piece is for.

Where it lives

Where it ends up

A console or a sideboard

The run of furniture guests pass, where a piece this size is seen at standing height rather than looked up at.

A shelf or a bookcase ledge

It needs depth rather than width, which is what a shelf has and a wall does not.

A desk or a study table

Close enough to be read at arm’s length, which is the distance the detail is cut for.

Care

Keeping it as it arrived

Dry cloth only

A soft, dry cloth. Nothing abrasive, and nothing that scrubs.

No cleaners

Alcohol and glass cleaner both attack a printed surface. A barely damp cloth, dried at once, is enough.

Away from damp

An indoor piece. Keep it off a bathroom shelf and away from a kitchen extractor.
