Iqra — “Read”

The first word of the revelation, cut in steel

The first word of the revelation, cut in steel, in 8 × 18 cm.

Four decisions before it ships

  1. What it is

The first word of the revelation, cut in steel. A pair: one at each end of the run, the word facing out.

  2. Size

Made in 8 × 18 cm, and sold as a pair.

  3. Finish

Four finishes. The shape is the same in each; what changes is how much it stands out against what is behind it.

  4. In use

A pair: one at each end of the run, the word facing out.

Size on the shelf

How big is it, really?

One size, 8 × 18 cm — and it comes as a pair. Both are drawn below with a run of books between them, at one scale.

A run of hardbacks · 24 cm (9.4 in) wide, 21 cm (8.3 in) high One size · 8 × 18 cm 3.1 × 7.1 in
SizeWidth × height (in)Width × height (cm)Best for
One size3.1 × 7.1″8 × 18 cmThe only size it is made in

Drawn as the pair it is sold as. They come as a pair, one at each end of the run. The books between them in the drawing are 21 cm tall, which is a standard hardback — everything is at one scale, so the shelf you see is the shelf they hold.

Materials

Craft

How it is made

Cut from sheet, so the shapes are the material rather than a pattern laid on it.

  • Letterforms cut clean through, so what is behind the piece shows between them
  • Cut edges left clean through the fine strokes of the script
  • The weight and the edge of real metal rather than a moulded copy

Why the cut matters. Because the shapes are cut out of the sheet rather than printed onto it, the piece has a front and a back that both read — and what it stands in front of becomes part of it. Turn it toward the light and the cut-through pattern lands on the surface behind it.

Finishes

The finishes

Four finishes of the same cut piece.

iqra — “read” in black

Black

The sharpest contrast of the set against a pale wall, and the one that reads most clearly from across a room.

iqra — “read” in gold

Gold

Warm and bright, and the one that reads best against off-white and cream walls.

iqra — “read” in silver

Silver

Cool and quiet, and the easiest to place in a room that already has chrome or glass in it.

iqra — “read” in copper

Copper

The warmest of the set, and the one that reads best against green, clay or deep neutral walls.

Using it

Standing it up

A pair: one at each end of the run, the word facing out.

  1. Set it on something that will not flex

Cut sheet is heavier than it looks, and a piece this size wants a fixed shelf or a table rather than a stack of books.

  2. Turn the cut face toward the room

The shapes are cut right through, so the piece reads from the side the light comes from. Turn it until the gaps carry the light.

  3. Leave it room to cast a shadow

A few centimeters off the wall behind it and the cut-through pattern lands on that wall as well — which is half of what a cut piece is for.

  • Packed for transit

Where it lives

Where it ends up

A console or a sideboard

The run of furniture guests pass, where a piece this size is seen at standing height rather than looked up at.

A shelf or a bookcase ledge

It needs depth rather than width, which is what a shelf has and a wall does not.

A desk or a study table

Close enough to be read at arm’s length, which is the distance the detail is cut for.

Care

Keeping it as it arrived

Dry cloth only

A soft, dry cloth along the length of the script. Nothing abrasive.

No cleaners

Alcohol, glass cleaner and polish will mark a finished metal surface. A barely damp cloth, dried at once, is enough.

Away from damp

An indoor piece. Keep it off a bathroom shelf and away from a kitchen extractor.

Frequently Asked Questions

Islamic bookends are crafted from high-quality metal. They feature a sleek, matte color finish that is both durable and stylish, making them a long-lasting addition to your home library or office.

Yes, our Islamic bookends are designed for both form and function. Their study metal construction provides excellent stability. The base of each bookend slides beneath the stack, using the weight of the books themselves to keep them securely upright.

Maintenance is simple! We recommend wiping them down periodically with a clean, dry, soft cloth to remove dust. Do not use any harsh chemicals or abrasive materials, as this may damage the finish.

Our collection features various sacred Islamic phrases and names rendered in elegant Arabic calligraphy. Depending on the specific design you choose, the script serves as a beautiful spiritual reminder and a piece of meaningful art for your bookshelf.
