Mabkhara on a wooden base

A lattice of metal around the incense

A solid wood block, 10 × 10 cm, under a metal lattice frame 13.5 cm tall. The incense burns inside the frame, and the smoke and the pattern's shadows rise through it. Two lattice patterns, five finishes.

Three decisions before it ships

  1. Pattern

Star Lattice or Petal Lattice — the size and the wood base are the same in both.

  2. Finish

Five colors for the metal frame: gold, black, white, silver or copper.

  3. In use

Bakhoor, oud, resin or an incense cone — it stands on its own base, nothing to fix.

Star Lattice mabkhara in gold on its wooden base

Pattern one

Star Lattice

Interlocking Islamic stars cut through every side of the frame, so the shadow it throws is a field of stars.

  • A classic star pattern on all four sides and the top
  • Painted metal frame
  • In gold, black, white, silver or copper
Petal Lattice mabkhara in gold on its wooden base

Pattern two

Petal Lattice

A repeating grid of elongated petals, finer and more even than the stars, for a calmer look on the table.

  • A continuous petal grid on all four sides and the top
  • Powder-coated metal frame
  • In gold, black, white, silver or copper

Size in the hand

Made in one size, 10 × 13.5 cm

One size only: a 10 × 10 cm base and 13.5 cm to the top of the frame. It is drawn below at true scale against a dining table, which is the honest way to judge it.

Dining table · 120 cm (47 in) wide, 75 cm (30 in) high One size · 10 × 13.5 cm 4 × 5.3 in
SizeBase × height (in)Base × height (cm)Best for
One size4 × 5.3″10 × 13.5 cmA console, a dining table or a prayer corner

Small on purpose. At 10 cm square it takes no more room than a mug, so it can stay out on a set table rather than being cleared away.

Finishes

Five colors for the frame

Every finish comes in both patterns; what changes is how the lattice reads against the wood and the room. Shown here in Star Lattice.

Lattice mabkhara with the metal frame in gold

Gold

Warm against the wood, and the finish that reads most festive at Ramadan.

Lattice mabkhara with the metal frame in black

Black

The lattice turns graphic, close to a silhouette, and suits a modern room.

Lattice mabkhara with the metal frame in white

White

Quiet and light, it lets the wood base do the talking.

Lattice mabkhara with the metal frame in silver

Silver

A cool metallic tone that sits well beside glass and gray stone.

Lattice mabkhara with the metal frame in copper

Copper

The warmest of the five, closest in tone to the wood itself.

Using it

Lighting the incense

Set it down where it will stay before you light anything, so the hot part is never carried.

  1. Place it first

A flat, stable surface with clear space above it, away from anything that hangs low.

  2. Light the incense inside the frame

Bakhoor, oud or resin on charcoal, or an incense cone on its own, set down inside the lattice.

  3. Let it cool before moving

Wait until the incense is out and the frame is cool to the touch, then clear the ash.

  • Never leave burning incense unattended
  • Keep it away from curtains and out of reach of children

Where it lives

Where it goes

The dining table

Small enough to stay among the plates, where guests sit and the scent is meant to reach.

A console by the door

The first thing a guest passes, and a fitting place to welcome them with bakhoor.

The prayer corner

A quiet place for bakhoor or oud, on a shelf or a low table beside the prayer rug.

Care

Keeping it as it arrived

Dry cloth for the metal

Wipe the frame with a soft, dry cloth. Household cleaners can dull a painted or coated finish.

Keep the wood dry

Wipe up spills at once and keep the base off wet surfaces.

Clear the ash after each use

Once it is cool, clear the ash so residue does not build up on the base.
