Craft

Cast, not carved and not printed

The panel is cast from white stone dust in one piece, so the relief is part of the body rather than carved out of it or printed onto it. It stands upright on a white-painted stand that you press onto the back with the double-sided tape supplied; the casting itself is solid all the way through.

On cast stone. White stone dust cast solid gives a piece real weight and a matte, slightly open surface — it takes the light the way a wall of a building does rather than the way a coated panel does.

A piece this heavy is set down once and left, so the two minutes spent deciding where are the whole job.

  1. Fit the stand before anything else

    Lay the piece face down, peel the double-sided tape and press the white-painted stand onto the back. Line it up centrally and hold it a few seconds — that is the whole assembly.

  2. Pick a surface that will not flex

    Cast stone is heavy for its size, so it wants a fixed shelf, a console or a mantel rather than a stack of books.

  3. Set it back from the edge

    A hand’s width in from the front, so it is not the first thing knocked when someone reaches past it.

Vinegar and household cleaners etch cast stone. Water alone, sparingly, if a mark will not brush off.
