Each column is close to four times taller than it is wide, so the pair suits a narrow vertical space a horizontal piece never fits. Both columns are drawn below at true scale, a finger-width apart, with the smaller size nested inside the right-hand one.

Mark it before you choose. Run painter's tape on the wall to the outer width and height, then stand back to where you normally sit and look at it from there. On a tall piece, hang it with its middle around 150 cm from the floor and the drop does the rest.

Craft

Open-cut script, no board behind it

Each column is the calligraphy itself, cut at 1.5 mm with nothing behind it, so the wall becomes the background and the letterforms hold the shape on their own. Mounted 1.5 cm proud, each carries its own shadow down the wall.

  • The script cut as the whole object, with no backing panel
  • Letterforms cut clean through, so the wall color becomes part of the artwork
  • Shiny finishes are brushed along the grain, then electropolished
  • Matte finishes are an electrostatic powder coat, baked on

Which process to pick. The shiny finishes are polished on real metal, so the reflection has depth a coating cannot imitate, and each piece carries its own character in the surface. The matte finishes are a baked powder coat, harder than sprayed paint and slower to yellow.

Two columns, one shared gap

A pair of narrow verticals reads as one piece when the tops align and the gap is even. Mark a plumb line for each rather than measuring in from a corner.

  1. Mark the center, not the top

    Pencil a point about 150 cm up from the floor. On a tall, narrow piece a center that sits right forgives a top edge that does not.

  2. Tape the outline first

    Painter's tape to the full width and height lets you check the position from across the room before you make a hole.

  3. Set one nail and hang

    One nail carries it through the bracket on the back. Hook it on, level it by eye, then walk to the far side of the room to confirm.

A soft, dry microfibre cloth moving in the direction of the brushing. Lift the piece by its edges when you move it.

Matte: dry cloth only

A baked powder coat is harder than sprayed paint and takes dusting well. Nothing abrasive.
