Five designs, one napkin ring

Acrylic napkin rings in five designs

The Basmala under a dome in Thuluth or Kufic, the Basmala cut to its own outline, or Saha w Afia in two scripts, each cut from mirror or gloss acrylic. The dome designs are 6 × 8 cm, the script designs 7 × 7 cm. It comes as a set of 6 or 12 of the same piece — one per place at the table.

Four decisions before it ships

Design

Basmala Dome, Basmala Thuluth, Basmala Kufic, Saha w Afia Thuluth or Saha w Afia Classic. In every design the napkin goes through it, folded, one at each place.
Size

Two sizes: 6 × 8 cm for the dome designs, 7 × 7 cm for the script designs — that is one piece, not the set.
Finish

Three finishes. The piece is the same in each; what changes is how much it lifts off the cloth.
How many

It comes as a set of 6 or 12 of the same piece — one per place at the table.

Size on the table

How big is one of them?

6 × 8 cm for a dome design, 7 × 7 cm for a script design. Both are drawn below beside a coffee mug at the same scale, one over the other — a set is this, six or twelve times over.

Size	Width × height (in)	Width × height (cm)	Designs
Dome designs	2.4 × 3.1″	6 × 8 cm	Basmala Dome, Basmala Kufic
Script designs	2.8 × 2.8″	7 × 7 cm	Basmala Thuluth, Saha w Afia Thuluth, Saha w Afia Classic

The size is one piece. Every figure here is a single piece. A set of 6 or 12 is that piece repeated, so the space it takes on the table is this multiplied by the number of places you are laying.

Craft

How it is made

The napkin goes through it, folded, one at each place.

Cut from acrylic that is already mirrored or glossed — the shine is the sheet, not a coat sprayed over it
Cut edges left clean, so the letterforms read from across the table
Light in the hand — a cut sheet rather than a cast or moulded piece

Why mirror acrylic. A mirrored sheet takes the color of whatever is around it — candlelight, the cloth, the plate — so the same piece reads warm on one table and cool on another. It is also why it photographs better than a painted finish.

The finishes

Three finishes, available in every design.

Using it

Setting the table

A table set for iftar is laid once and cleared every night for a month. These three habits are what survive that.

Lay it once, before the first night

Set one at every place and leave the setting alone for the month. The point of a set is that the table is already laid when the adhan comes.
Clear it with the cloth, not the plates

It goes back in its box rather than into the washing-up bowl. That single habit is most of why a set survives a whole Ramadan.
Turn the script toward the guest

The piece is cut to be read from the seat, not from the head of the table.

Packed for transit

Where it lives

Where it ends up

The iftar table, every night of Ramadan

This is what it is for: one at each place, from the first night to the last.

Eid, and the table after it

The same setting carries over — the greeting changes, the table does not.

Put away between years

Boxed and in a cupboard for eleven months. It is worth keeping the box it came in for exactly that.

Against the alternatives

	This piece	Commonly sold alternatives
Material	Mirror or gloss acrylic	Mass-produced, in a thinner material
Designs	Five, in three scripts	Usually one design
Finishes	Three to choose from	Usually one fixed color
What it is	A ring that is read rather than one that only holds	A printed or foil-stamped piece, where the shine is a layer

Care

Keeping it as it arrived

A dry cloth, nothing wet

Water spots and household cleaners both mark acrylic. Dry and soft is the whole routine.

Nothing abrasive

A mirror face scratches from the surface down. A soft cloth is what it wants — the scouring side of a sponge, or a dry kitchen towel, leaves fine marks that catch the light.

Hand wash only if it must be washed

These go near food rather than through a dishwasher — heat is what warps a thin acrylic sheet.
