Muslim prayer beads: tasbih and misbaha for daily dhikr

Muslim prayer beads are a string of beads used to count dhikr, the remembrance of Allah, such as SubhanAllah, Alhamdulillah and Allahu Akbar after salah. They go by several names. In Arabic they are called tasbih (also written tasbeeh or tesbih), misbaha (or masbaha) and subha, and in English they are often called an Islamic or Muslim rosary.

Counting dhikr after salah

After each prayer, many Muslims say SubhanAllah 33 times, Alhamdulillah 33 times and Allahu Akbar 33 or 34 times. A tasbih lets you keep count without losing focus. You start at the tassel, say one phrase on each bead and move to the next phrase when you reach the end of a set.

Prayer beads for men and women

A tasbih is not made for one gender. Dark stones and woods such as onyx, obsidian, hematite and kuka give a plain, classic look. Light and colorful stones such as pink quartz, opal, moonstone and amazonite look softer. Bead size changes how the tasbih feels in the hand.

Bead size How it feels Good for
6 mm Small and light Carrying in a pocket or bag
7 mm In between Daily use at home or on the go
8 mm Larger, easy to grip Long dhikr, moving beads one by one

Look at the bead size and the material. Smaller 6 mm beads keep the tasbih compact; 8 mm beads are easier to move one by one. Each product page lists the stone or wood and the bead size.

Choose a dhikr—such as Subhanallah, Alhamdulillah, Allahu Akbar, Astaghfirullah or the 99 Names of Allah. Recite one phrase per bead, moving bead by bead until you complete all 33 or 99 counts. Many people repeat cycles three times to complete the sunnah tasbih count after salah.
