Can You Hang Wall Art Without Drilling? It Depends on Weight

Light, flat-backed pieces can go up with tape: our wooden maps weigh 0.5–2.5 kg and ship with it. Metal and glass need a nail or screw. Here's how to tell.

Yes, if the piece is light, flat-backed and made for it. Our wooden country maps weigh 0.5 to 2.5 kg (1.1–5.5 lb) and go up with the double-sided tape in the box, no nails. Most of our cut-metal and glass pieces are a different job: they hang from a bracket or hanger, so they need a nail or screw in the wall.

So on a rented wall the real question is which group your piece belongs to. The box tells you that, and the weight of your size tells you how much margin you have.

Check what your piece ships with before you buy anything

Every size has its own catalog weight, and every listing says how the piece goes up. Here they are side by side:

Weight does not follow size: the 90 cm (35.4″) Afghanistan map weighs 2.5 kg, a little over half the 4.5 kg of the largest drop pair. To choose the size itself, see our size guide.

Our own orders show the tape group is not a niche. In the twelve months to October 27, 2026, buyers took 209 of the five wall maps they ordered most, the Palestine, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Lebanon and Yemen maps, all wooden and all mounted with the tape in the box. They also went large: on the wooden Afghanistan map, 57 of the 75 sold were the biggest 90 × 70 cm size, the 2.5 kg one.

Sort the piece into tape, nails or a wall fixing

Tape only: the wooden maps

Our wooden country maps are the one group whose listings say tape is all they need. They mount with the double-sided tape in the box, and the listings add two practical notes: place the tapes vertically for a stronger hold, and use a hairdryer when you want the tape to come off cleanly.

Nails and tape in the box: the flat MDF pieces

The drop pair and the three-panel set arrive with 12 nails and double-sided tape, and both have flat backs that sit flush on the wall. A hammer and those small nails leave a few small holes but involve no drilling. The listings supply both and do not say the tape alone can carry the piece, so plan on using the nails. If your lease allows no holes at all, choose from the map group instead.

A wall fixing: cut metal, glass and the key holder

The cut-metal pieces in the table hang from brackets or hangers, and many listings in our metal wall art collection note that the piece stands 1.5 to 2 cm (0.6–0.8″) off the wall. The glass set in the table hangs from an attachment on the back of each panel, and the key holder comes with its own hanging tools. All of these need something in the wall. Our guide to hanging metal wall art on drywall explains when that means a plain nail and when it means a stud or an anchor. If drilling is off the table in your lease, this is the group to ask your landlord about before you order.

Give the tape a smooth, clean, fully cured wall

Tape and adhesive strips hold by contact, so the wall matters as much as the piece. 3M, which makes Command strips, says its picture-hanging strips are not recommended for heavily textured walls because the adhesive may not make full contact, and should not be used on wallpaper, fabric, brick or other rough surfaces.

3M's other conditions are worth borrowing for any taped piece:

  • Wait seven days after painting before sticking anything to the wall.
  • Clean the spot with isopropyl rubbing alcohol and let it dry; a household spray or wipe can leave a slippery film. Clean only the wall: the care notes on the MDF and acrylic pieces in the table say to keep alcohol off the piece.
  • Do not hang a strip-mounted piece over a bed. 3M's instructions say so for its own strips, and we would treat any taped piece the same way.

With the wall ready, a taped map goes up in three steps:

  1. Mark the position lightly with a pencil or a strip of painter's tape, and check it with a level. Once the tape touches the wall you will not want to slide it.
  2. Apply the tape to the back with the pieces running vertically, as the listing advises.
  3. Line the map up with your marks and press it firmly against the wall over every piece of tape.

Using your own strips? Count the pairs and check the frame size

If you prefer bought picture-hanging strips to the tape in the box, read two numbers on the packet. The weight rating is for a set number of pairs working together, not for each pair: 3M rates four pairs of its large Command picture-hanging strips at about 7.3 kg (16 lb). And there is a maximum frame size, 61 × 91 cm (24 × 36″) for those same large strips.

Apply the margin our drywall guide uses for hardware: a rating of at least twice the weight of the piece. The largest map, at 2.5 kg (5.5 lb), needs strips rated for 5 kg (11 lb) or more, which four large pairs clear. Its size is the catch: the 90 × 70 cm Afghanistan map, at 35.4 × 27.6″, is bigger than that maximum frame. Ratings also differ between 3M's own pages for the same medium strip, 10 lb on one and 12 lb on another, so go by the packet in your hand.

Take a taped piece down slowly, with warmth

Our map listings say a hairdryer helps the tape come off cleanly, so warm it first. For Command strips, 3M's instructions are to stretch the strip's tab slowly straight down along the wall, not out toward you. If a tab breaks, its FAQ suggests sawing through the remaining strip with dental floss and softening it with a hairdryer.

Or skip the wall: choose a piece made to stand

The surest way to leave a rented wall untouched is to put nothing on it. Our cast-stone reliefs are made for a console, shelf or mantel, and their listings say plainly that they are not made to hang. Each comes with a white stand that presses onto the back with the double-sided tape supplied, and that is the whole assembly.

They are small, 20 × 20 × 2 cm (7.9 × 7.9 × 0.8″), and heavy for their size at 1 to 1.2 kg, about the weight of a mid-size wooden map. In the twelve months to October 27, 2026, buyers took 79 of the 4 Quls relief in square Kufic and 78 of the triple-arched First Kalimah relief. More pieces made to stand rather than hang are in our table decor collection.

Short answers on tape, nails and rented walls

Will the tape mark my wall when I move out?

We cannot promise that for every wall, because paints and finishes differ. Our listings say a hairdryer helps the tape come off cleanly. If you are unsure, stick one small piece of tape somewhere out of sight first and take it off a few days later. Your lease, not this guide, decides what counts as damage.

Can I put a metal piece up with tape?

Not most of ours. The cut-metal listings we checked for this guide describe brackets, hangers and screws, not tape. A few flat metal pieces in our catalog do list tape, so go by the listing of the piece you are looking at.

Can a key holder go up with tape?

We would not do it. A key holder is pulled every time a key comes off it, and its listing ships hanging tools rather than tape. Our entryway key holder with a mihrab-arch frame weighs 0.5 to 2 kg by size, and with 945 sold it was our most-bought piece by units in the twelve months to October 27, 2026.

The tape-mounted maps, the flat MDF pieces and the rest of our wood and acrylic work are in our wooden and acrylic Islamic wall art collection, with dimensions listed on every product page.

A note on scope: this guide covers hanging methods and weights only. It is general guidance, not advice on your lease or a survey of your wall; if the wall is damaged or unusual, ask your landlord or a qualified installer. Questions about religious practice, including where and how Qur'anic text should be displayed in the home, are matters on which scholars differ, and we would encourage you to consult your own local scholar rather than take guidance from a retailer.

Weights, sizes and mounting details are taken from our own product listings. Order figures are from our own store data for the twelve months to October 27, 2026. Strip ratings and instructions are 3M's own, as published for its Command picture-hanging strips in October 2026.
