Hematite is dense and metallic-dark, so a hematite strand is noticeably heavier in the hand than stone of the same size.

Why the bead size matters. A tasbih is counted by feel, not by sight. A bead too small slips past the thumb and the count goes wrong; too large and the strand gets bulky in a pocket. Six to eight millimeters is the range that stays countable without becoming a handful.

A tasbih is counted by feel. Three small habits are what keep the count right when your eyes are elsewhere.

  1. Find the thumb position first

    Hold the strand so it hangs over the index finger with the thumb resting on the first bead. Everything after that is one motion.

  2. Push, do not pull

    Move each bead away from you with the thumb rather than dragging the cord. That is what keeps the count reliable when you are not watching.

  3. Let the marker do the counting

    Work to the divider or the head bead and start again. Counting the beads themselves is what breaks concentration.

Keeping it as it arrived

Keep it dry

Wipe with a soft, dry cloth. Stone and wood both mark where water sits, and a wet cord stretches.

No oils or cleaners

Nothing on the beads and nothing on the cord. Skin oil is what gives a well-used strand its patina; anything else just dulls it.

Store it loose

Coiled in a pocket or a box rather than hung on a hook, which puts all the weight on one point of the cord.
