Bring the Bismillah to every place at your table.

These Bismillah napkin holders are cut from plexiglass and tied around each napkin with a cord: the cord passes through the holes at each side, so the calligraphy sits on the front of the napkin. Every design is 8 x 3.7 cm (3.1" x 1.5") and comes as a set of 6 or 12.

Three designs, one tie-on holder

Bismillah napkin holders that tie on, in three designs

The Bismillah on an arched plate, in square Kufic or in Thuluth, each 8 × 3.7 cm and tied around the napkin with a cord. It comes as a set of 6 or 12 of the same piece — one per napkin.

Five decisions before it ships

  1. Design

Bismillah Arch, Kufic Bismillah or Thuluth Bismillah. Every design is the same size and ties on the same way.

  2. How many

It comes as a set of 6 or 12 of the same piece — one per napkin.

  3. Size

One size, 8 × 3.7 cm — that is one piece, not the set.

  4. Finish

Gold, Silver or Transparent. The piece is the same in each; what changes is how it stands out from the cloth.

  5. In use

One with each napkin at the table, and back in its box when the table is cleared.

Size on the table

How big is one of them?

8 × 3.7 cm for one piece, whichever design you choose. It is drawn below beside a coffee mug, at the same scale — a set is this, 6 or 12 times over.

Coffee mug · 9 cm (3.5 in) wide, 10 cm (3.9 in) high One size · 8 × 3.7 cm 3.1 × 1.5 in
SizeWidth × height (in)Width × height (cm)Best for
One size3.1 × 1.5″8 × 3.7 cmOne with each napkin

The size is one piece. Every figure here is a single holder. A set of 6 or 12 is that piece repeated, one for each napkin you lay.

Bismillah, on a string, close up

Craft

How it is made

A string runs through the holes at each side and around the napkin, so the Bismillah sits on the front of it.

  • Cut from plexiglass — acrylic glass — in gold, silver or clear
  • Cut clean at the edge, so the script reads at arm’s length across the table
  • Light enough to sit on a folded napkin without pulling it out of shape

Gold, silver or clear. The clear piece lets the napkin’s own color show through the script; the gold and silver ones put the script in front of it. Same piece, same size — the choice is how much it stands out from the cloth.

Designs

The designs

Three designs, each tied around the napkin with the same cord.

The Bismillah Arch napkin holder with cord in gold

Bismillah Arch

The Bismillah in Thuluth on a plate with arched, notched ends.

The Kufic Bismillah napkin holder with cord in gold

Kufic Bismillah

The Bismillah squared into Kufic on a plain rectangular plate.

The Thuluth Bismillah napkin holder with cord in gold

Thuluth Bismillah

The full Basmala in Thuluth on a plain rectangular plate.

Finishes

The finishes

Three colors, available in every design.

Bismillah, on a string in gold

Gold

The warmest of the choices, and the one that carries furthest in candlelight on a laid table.

Bismillah, on a string in silver

Silver

Cooler and quieter, and the easiest to set beside steel cutlery and clear glass.

Bismillah, on a string in transparent

Transparent

Clear, so the napkin’s own color shows through and the script is what you see.

Using it

Setting the table

A string runs through the holes at each side and around the napkin, so the Bismillah sits on the front of it.

  1. Lay it once, before the first night

Set one at every place and leave the setting alone for the month. The point of a set is that the table is already laid when the adhan comes.

  2. Clear it with the cloth, not the plates

It goes back in its box rather than into the washing-up bowl. That single habit is most of why a set survives a whole Ramadan.

  3. Turn the script toward the guest

The piece is cut to be read from the seat, not from the head of the table.

  • Packed for transit

Where it lives

Where it ends up

The iftar table, every night of Ramadan

This is what it is for: one at each place, from the first night to the last.

Eid, and the table after it

The same setting carries over — the greeting changes, the table does not.

Put away between years

Boxed and in a cupboard for eleven months. It is worth keeping the box it came in for exactly that.

What it isA holder tied on with string rather than a ring pushed overA plain ring or a paper band, with nothing to read on it

Care

Keeping it as it arrived

Soft cloth, a little water

A damp soft cloth and nothing abrasive. Acrylic scratches before it breaks, and a scouring pad is what scratches it.

Hand wash, not the dishwasher

Hot water and a dishwasher’s tumble are both harder on a cut edge than a month of iftar tables.

Stored flat, in its box

Back in the box between years, flat rather than loose in a drawer where the pieces rub.
