Lebanon

A cork map on an MDF base, inside a wooden frame

Lebanon printed on cork over an MDF base, framed. Two sizes, 43 × 58 up to 58 × 80 cm.

Three decisions before it ships

  1. Size

Two sizes, 43 × 58 up to 58 × 80 cm, drawn to scale against a sofa below.

  2. Finish

Two frame colors — Black or White.

  3. Hanging

A shape is placed by eye rather than measured to a center line, so tape the outline on the wall before you commit.

Size & scale

Two sizes, 43 × 58 up to 58 × 80 cm

The ladder runs from 43 × 58 cm up to 58 × 80 cm. Both are drawn below at true scale above a three-seat sofa, which matters more on a map than on a rectangle — the outline leaves air around it.

Three-seat sofa · 200 cm (79 in) wide, 82 cm (32 in) high XL · 58 × 80 cm 22.8 × 31.5 in L · 43 × 58 cm 16.9 × 22.8 in
SizeWidth × height (in)Width × height (cm)Best for
L16.9 × 22.8″43 × 58 cmA narrow wall beside a door, or a bookcase end
XL22.8 × 31.5″58 × 80 cmA hallway run, or a stairwell

Mark it before you choose. Run painter's tape on the wall to the outer width and height, then stand back to where you normally sit and look at it from there. On a tall piece, hang it with its middle around 150 cm from the floor and the drop does the rest.

Craft

Printed on cork, over an MDF base

The map is printed on cork and mounted on an MDF base, with a wooden frame around the whole panel. The cork is what gives the face its grain: it takes the light unevenly, so the map reads as a material rather than an image.

  • The map printed on cork, over an MDF base
  • A wooden frame around the whole panel
  • A cork face you can push a pin into, and pull it out again

On the cork. Printing on cork rather than paper is the whole reason to choose this one: the surface has a grain, and it takes a push pin and closes up again — so the map keeps changing as you travel.

Finishes

The finishes

The map is the same in both; the frame around it is the choice. White keeps it light on a pale wall, black holds its edge on a busy one.

Lebanon wall map in black

Black

The sharpest contrast of the set against a pale wall, and the one that reads most clearly from across a room.

Lebanon wall map in white

White

Reads quietly, and lets the cut line of the calligraphy do the work rather than the color.

Hanging it

Placed by eye, then marked

A map goes up by its outline rather than a center line, which is a different job from hanging a rectangle. Three steps.

  1. Tape the outline on the wall first

A country is a shape, not a rectangle, so run painter's tape around its extremes and live with it for a day.

  2. Pick the height by eye level, not the ceiling

A map is read rather than looked at, so put its middle at standing eye level in the room it goes in.

  3. Mark the extremes, then hang to the fixing it arrives with

Pencil the top and one side, and use whatever the piece comes fitted with rather than adding your own.

Where it goes

Where it goes

A study or an office wall

The wall you sit facing, where a map is read rather than glanced at.

A child’s room

A country on the wall gets looked at every day for years, which no framed print manages.

An entry or a hallway

A shape reads at a glance in a space nobody stands still in, which is exactly what a map is.

Care

Keeping it as it arrived

Dry cloth only

A soft, dry cloth across the cork, and nothing abrasive.

Nothing wet

Cork takes up water and the MDF behind it swells. Keep every liquid away from the face.

Away from damp and direct sun

An interior wall out of the midday light and away from a bathroom.

Choose your size and finish

Two sizes, one construction. Tape the outline on the wall before you choose — the jump from 43 × 58 to 58 × 80 is larger than it reads on a screen.
