Ahlan wa Sahlan

A table set that says welcome at every place

A table set that says welcome at every place. A 24-piece set for six: a placemat, a napkin, a coaster and a cutlery pouch at every place. Ahlan wa Sahlan — welcome — embroidered in gold, which is what a table laid for guests says anyway.

Three decisions before it ships

  1. What is in it

Six placemats, six napkins, six coasters and six cutlery pouches — 24 pieces, four at each place.

  2. Size

    Four pieces, four sizes: placemat 48 × 34 cm, napkin 37 × 37 cm, cutlery pouch 12 × 25 cm, coaster 14 × 14 cm.

  3. Service for

Six people. Two sets lay a table of twelve.

Size on the table

How big is each piece?

Every piece in the set, drawn at the same scale beside a coffee mug. The placemat is the one that decides whether six fit at your table.

Coffee mug · 9 cm (3.5 in) wide, 10 cm (3.9 in) high Placemat · 48 × 34 cm 18.9 × 13.4 in Napkin · 37 × 37 cm 14.6 × 14.6 in Cutlery pouch · 12 × 25 cm 4.7 × 9.8 in Coaster · 14 × 14 cm 5.5 × 5.5 in
SizeWidth × height (in)Width × height (cm)Best for
Coaster5.5 × 5.5″14 × 14 cmUnder the glass — six in the set
Cutlery pouch4.7 × 9.8″12 × 25 cmHolds the knife, fork and spoon — six in the set
Napkin14.6 × 14.6″37 × 37 cmFolded on the plate or beside it — six in the set
Placemat18.9 × 13.4″48 × 34 cmUnder each plate — six in the set

Measure the table, not the room. Three placemats side by side take 144 cm of table edge, so three a side wants a table of about 150 cm or more. On a 120 cm table, lay two a side and one at each end.

Craft

How it is made

One cloth for all four pieces, and the design embroidered into it. Ahlan wa Sahlan — welcome — embroidered in gold, which is what a table laid for guests says anyway.

  • A linen-texture polyester blend: the look of linen, in a cloth made for a cold machine wash
  • The design is embroidered into the cloth, not printed onto its surface
  • Four pieces to a place and six places to the set, so the table is laid in one go

One setting, repeated six times. Placemat, napkin, coaster and cutlery pouch come as one set in one cloth, so a table laid with it reads as a single setting repeated around the table rather than pieces bought one at a time.

Using it

Laying the table

A table laid for iftar is set once and cleared every night for a month. These three habits are what keep a cloth set looking the way it arrived.

  1. Placemat first, then build on it

Square each placemat to the table edge, set the plate on it, the cutlery pouch to the right and the coaster above the knife. The napkin goes folded on the plate.

  2. Iron out the travel folds on the reverse

Straight out of the box it carries the folds it traveled in. A low iron on the back takes them out and leaves the embroidery raised.

  3. Clear it with the plates, every night

Shake the crumbs off and fold the set rather than leaving it under the next day’s dishes. It is laid fresh at sunset.

  • Machine washable, cold and delicate
  • Packed for transit

Where it lives

Where it ends up

The iftar table, every night of Ramadan

Six places laid from the first night to the last, which is what a 24-piece set is sized for.

Eid, and the guests after it

The same setting carries the Eid table, and any dinner where the whole family sits down at once.

Folded flat between years

Washed, ironed on the reverse and folded flat for eleven months. Cloth keeps better flat than rolled.

Care

Keeping it as it arrived

Cold and delicate, or by hand

A cold wash on the delicate cycle, or by hand. That is what the cloth and the embroidery are made for, and it is the whole routine.

Iron on the reverse, on low

Turn each piece over and iron the back on a low setting. The embroidery stays raised instead of being pressed flat.

Crumbs off before the wash

Shake each piece out after the meal, before it goes in the machine. Crumbs are what snag embroidery in a drum.

Frequently Asked Questions

The phrase is deeply rooted in hospitality and kindness. 'Ahlan' comes from 'Ahl' (family), and 'Sahlan' comes from 'Sahl' (plain/easy path). Together, they translate to 'You have come to your family and have found ease.' It embodies the Islamic tradition of welcoming guests with an open heart and providing them with a sanctuary of comfort.

The most respectful and traditional placement is the entryway or foyer. According to Islamic etiquette, the first thing a guest should feel is welcomed and at ease. Placing this art near your front door serves as an immediate visual 'Salam' and sets a spiritual tone of hospitality for everyone who enters your home.

No, our wooden pieces are manufactured in Turkey using high-quality MDF that is specifically treated for durability. This material is more resistant to the expansion and contraction caused by humidity changes compared to solid wood, ensuring your welcome sign remains a beautiful, flat, and intact focal point for years.

It depends on your interior style. Wood arts offer a warm, organic feel that complements traditional or rustic decor. Metal arts provide a sleek, modern look with a premium electro-coated finish. Both are crafted with the same attention to scriptural accuracy and Turkish craftsmanship.

While the physical art is a beautiful reminder, Islamic teachings emphasize the intention. Hanging this verse shows your commitment to 'Ikram al-Dayf' (honoring the guest), which is a virtue highly praised by the Prophet (PBUH). The art serves as a constant 'Dhikr' for you and a comfort for your visitors.

Our metal art is designed to be lightweight despite its durable industrial finish. Most pieces can be easily hung using a single nail or the specialized mounting hardware provided. This ensures that you can display the sacred script securely without the need for heavy-duty tools or damaging your walls.

We recommend hanging our art in sheltered areas or indoors. While our metal pieces are electro-coated for rust resistance, direct exposure to rain or harsh sunlight over many years can eventually affect the finish. Placing it just inside the entryway or in a covered porch area ensures the art stays in pristine condition.

Our art is designed for easy relocation. Simply lift it from its mounting point and move it to a new location. We suggest handling the piece with care and cleanliness, keeping in mind that it represents a significant value in Islamic culture. Always ensure the script remains elevated and never touches the floor during the move.

With over 6,000 positive reviews, IWA is the authority in premium Islamic art. Every piece is designed and produced in Turkey, combining modern precision with a deep respect for Arabic calligraphy. We offer 24/7 support and 3-5 day shipping to ensure your experience is as seamless as the art itself.

While the choice of color is largely aesthetic, Gold and Silver are traditionally associated with the honor and radiance of the Message. Black provides a modern, bold contrast that makes the calligraphy stand out. Choose the finish that best inspires a sense of 'Khushu' (tranquility and focus) within your specific home environment.

The Islamic Dining Sets are made out of quality Premium Linen-Texture Polyester Blend.

There are 4 units available for each piece in our Islamic Dining Sets. (4 Coasters, 4 Cutlery Poaches, 4 Napkins and 4 Placemats)

You may wash the Islamic Dining Set as you like unless you pass 40 centigrades. Please avoid using hard chemicals.

The designs available on our Islamic Dining Sets are embroidery on cloth, available in Silver and Gold color options.
