Ramadan Kareem, in cast stone

A cast stone napkin stand with the greeting in relief

A cast stone napkin stand with the greeting in relief, 14 × 8.5 cm. One stand for the table. It holds the napkins standing on edge, not lying flat.

Three decisions before it ships

  1. What it does

One stand for the table. It holds the napkins standing on edge, not lying flat.

  2. Size

    One size, 14 × 8.5 cm, 4 cm deep.

  3. In use

It stands in the middle of the table and is refilled from the front as the napkins go.

Craft

How it is made

The napkins stand on edge inside it, in the middle of the table where every seat can reach.

  • Cast in a stone and concrete blend, with a matte stone finish
  • The Ramadan Kareem calligraphy stands out from the face in relief, cast in rather than printed on
  • Heavy for its size, which is what keeps a stack of napkins upright in it

On cast stone. A cast piece carries its weight low, so it does not tip when the stack runs down to the last few napkins. The matte face takes the light softly rather than reflecting it.

Using it

Filling it

The napkins stand on edge inside it, in the middle of the table where every seat can reach.

  1. Square the stack, then stand it in

Tap the napkins square on the table and slide them in as one block. A squared stack stands up straight; napkins fed in one at a time lean.

  2. Leave a finger’s width of room

Not packed tight. The next napkin should come out on its own rather than bringing two more with it.

  3. Set it where more than one seat can reach

The middle of the table, or the end nearest the kitchen. A stand at one person’s elbow gets passed around all meal.

  • Packed for transit

Where it lives

Where it ends up

The middle of the iftar table

Where every seat can reach it, from the first date to the last glass of tea.

The suhoor counter

The early meal is often eaten standing in the kitchen, and a stand keeps the napkins together on a counter.

Every other meal of the year

It is a napkin stand first, so it stays out after Ramadan rather than going back into a box.

Care

Keeping it as it arrived

A dry brush or cloth

Dust it dry. Cast stone is porous, and water carries dirt into the surface rather than off it.

Keep drinks off it

A ring from a wet glass sinks in rather than wiping off, which is the one mark cast stone keeps.

Set it down, don’t slide it

Dragged across wood, the base marks the table.
