Ramadan Mubarak, on the cake

A cake topper in gloss or mirror acrylic

A cake topper in gloss or mirror acrylic, 9 × 21 cm. Sold on its own.

Four decisions before it ships

  1. What it is

A cake topper in gloss or mirror acrylic. It stands in the top of the cake, and is hand washed afterwards.

  2. Size

One size, 9 × 21 cm — that is one piece, not the set.

  3. Finish

Four finishes. The piece is the same in each; what changes is how much it lifts off the cloth.

  4. In use

    Sold on its own.

Size on the table

How big is one of them?

9 × 21 cm, drawn below beside a coffee mug at the same scale.

Coffee mug · 9 cm (3.5 in) wide, 10 cm (3.9 in) high One size · 9 × 21 cm 3.5 × 8.3 in
SizeWidth × height (in)Width × height (cm)Best for
One size3.5 × 8.3″9 × 21 cmThe only size it is made in

Measured against something you already know the size of. The mug in the drawing is 9 cm across and 10 cm high, which is a standard coffee mug — the piece stands next to it at the same scale.

Craft

How it is made

It stands in the top of the cake, and is hand washed afterwards.

  • Cut from acrylic that is already mirrored or glossed — the shine is the sheet, not a coat sprayed over it
  • Cut edges left clean, so the letterforms read from across the table
  • Light in the hand — a cut sheet rather than a cast or moulded piece

Why mirror acrylic. A mirrored sheet takes the color of whatever is around it — candlelight, the cloth, the plate — so the same piece reads warm on one table and cool on another. It is also why it photographs better than a painted finish.

Finishes

The finishes

Using it

Setting the table

A table set for iftar is laid once and cleared every night for a month. These three habits are what survive that.

  1. Lay it once, before the first night

Set one at every place and leave the setting alone for the month. The point of a set is that the table is already laid when the adhan comes.

  2. Clear it with the cloth, not the plates

It goes back in its box rather than into the washing-up bowl. That single habit is most of why a set survives a whole Ramadan.

  3. Turn the script toward the guest

The piece is cut to be read from the seat, not from the head of the table.

  • Packed for transit

Where it lives

Where it ends up

The iftar table, every night of Ramadan

This is what it is for: one at each place, from the first night to the last.

Eid, and the table after it

The same setting carries over — the greeting changes, the table does not.

Put away between years

Boxed and in a cupboard for eleven months. It is worth keeping the box it came in for exactly that.

Care

Keeping it as it arrived

A dry cloth, nothing wet

Water spots and household cleaners both mark acrylic. Dry and soft is the whole routine.

Nothing abrasive

A mirror face scratches from the surface down. A soft cloth is what it wants — the scouring side of a sponge, or a dry kitchen towel, leaves fine marks that catch the light.

Hand wash only if it must be washed

These go near food rather than through a dishwasher — heat is what warps a thin acrylic sheet.
