Surah Al-Alaq 1–4

"Read" — the first revelation

Iqra bismi rabbika cut from 1.5 mm metal as a slim band, standing 1.5 cm clear of the wall. Two lengths — 69 or 99 cm.

Three decisions before it ships

  1. Size

Two lengths — 69 or 99 cm — drawn to scale against a sofa below.

  2. Finish

Four finishes — black, matte gold, matte silver or matte copper.

  3. Hanging

It arrives ready to hang, so the work is one level line at the right height.

What is written on it

The first words revealed

Read, in the name of your Lord who created — the first revelation, which is why this one so often goes above a desk or a bookshelf.

Iqra' bismi rabbika allathee khalaq, Khalaqal-insana min 'alaq, Iqra' warabbukal-akram, Allathee 'allama bil-qalam.

“Read in the name of your Lord who created, created man from a clinging substance. Read, and your Lord is the most Generous, who taught by the pen.”

Surah Al-Alaq 96:1–4

Size & scale

A narrow band is judged against the furniture

Both lengths are more than five times wider than they are tall, so these read as a line above a desk or a shelf rather than as a panel. Drawn below at true scale over a three-seat sofa.

Three-seat sofa · 200 cm (79 in) wide, 82 cm (32 in) high XL · 99 × 19 cm 39 × 7.5 in L · 69 × 13 cm 27.2 × 5.1 in
SizeWidth × height (in)Width × height (cm)Best for
L27.2 × 5.1″69 × 13 cmAbove a desk, a bookshelf, or a doorway
XL39 × 7.5″99 × 19 cmAbove a long desk or a two-seat sofa — the length most chosen

Match it to the furniture, not the wall. A low horizontal piece looks right when it spans roughly two thirds of whatever sits beneath it. Run painter's tape to the full width first and look at it from where you normally sit.

Fine metal Arabic calligraphy wall hanging featuring the first verses of Surah Al-Alaq for Muslim homes

Craft

The depth is structural, not printed

The four verses are cut clean through the sheet as one band, so the wall color runs inside the letterforms and the line stays legible at this depth.

  • Four verses cut as a single narrow band
  • Letterforms cut clean through, so the wall color becomes part of the artwork
  • Electrostatic powder coating, baked on for a hard, even surface
  • Cut edges left clean through the fine strokes of the script

A coating that is baked, not sprayed. Powder is applied electrostatically and then cured, which gives a harder and more even surface than a sprayed paint.

Finishes

The finishes

Four finishes in an electrostatic powder paint. Black reads hardest against a pale wall; gold, silver and copper each pick up the light differently.

Surah Al-Alaq ayat 1-4 metal wall art in black

Black

The sharpest contrast of the set against a pale wall, and the one that reads most clearly from across a room.

Surah Al-Alaq ayat 1-4 metal wall art in matte gold

Matte Gold

Powder coated. Warmth without shine, which suits a room lit mostly by lamps rather than daylight.

Surah Al-Alaq ayat 1-4 metal wall art in matte silver

Matte Silver

Powder coated. Cool and quiet, and the easiest to place in a room that already has chrome or glass in it.

Surah Al-Alaq ayat 1-4 metal wall art in matte copper

Matte Copper

Powder coated. The warmest of the matte finishes, and the one that reads best against green, clay or deep neutral walls.

Hanging it

One level line does the whole job

A narrow band shows a tilt more than a deep piece does, so mark the line rather than judging it by eye.

  1. Measure to the fixing first

Set it face up and measure from the left edge to each fixing point, so the wall marks come from the piece rather than from guesswork.

  2. Pencil one level line

A low, wide piece shows every degree of tilt, so mark a light horizontal line and put every fixing on it.

  3. Tape the width, then hang

Painter's tape to the full width lets you check the position from across the room before drilling.

Where it goes

The walls it was sized for

Above the sofa

The wall this was designed for, spanning roughly two thirds of the seat beneath it.

Dining and console walls

A long, low piece sits naturally over a sideboard or a dining table, where a tall piece would crowd the ceiling.

Entryway and hallway

Cut work keeps a corridor from feeling closed in, because the wall reads through the letterforms.

Against the alternatives

This pieceCommonly sold alternatives
MaterialCut metal, electrostatic powder coatedPrinted canvas, acrylic sheet, or thin laser-cut board
DepthStands 1.5 cm off the wall and casts a shadowTypically sits flat against the wall
FinishesFour to choose fromUsually one fixed color
SizesTwo, up to 99 cm wideOften a single fixed size
The textAll four verses, not oneOften an excerpt rather than the whole text

Care

Keeping it as it arrived

Dry cloth only

A soft, dry cloth along the length of the script. A baked powder coat is harder than sprayed paint and takes dusting well.

No solvents

Alcohol, glass cleaner and polish will dull a powder-painted surface. If a mark will not lift dry, use a barely damp cloth and dry it at once.

Away from damp

An indoor piece. Keep it off bathroom walls and away from a kitchen extractor.

Choose your size and finish

Two sizes, and the finish is the rest of the decision. Tape the width on the wall first — it is the only measurement that matters.

Frequently Asked Questions

Iqra' is the birth of the Qur'anic message. It serves as a perpetual reminder that the pursuit of knowledge is the primary obligation in Islam. By starting the revelation with a command to read 'in the name of your Lord,' Allah connected intellect and science directly to faith, establishing that true learning should always lead back to the Creator.

It acts as a 'sanctuary for the mind.' Placing this verse in a workspace or library anchors the environment in a sense of purpose. It reminds the inhabitant that their professional or academic labor is a form of worship, provided it is done with the intention of growth and honoring the intellect bestowed upon them by Allah.

Verse 4 states: 'Who taught by the pen.' In an age of digital distraction, this is a powerful grounding statement. It celebrates the preservation of truth and history. Having it displayed in a home honors the legacy of scholarship and encourages a family culture that values deep reading, writing, and intellectual rigor.

This piece often features a bold, vertically-driven 'Jali Thuluth' script. Because 'Iqra' is a short, punchy command, the calligraphy is designed to be visually striking and authoritative. The interlocking letters of the first four verses create a dense, beautiful texture that looks like a complex tapestry of light and shadow when rendered in metal.

We employ a multi-layered 3D technique where the calligraphy is precision-cut from high-grade steel and mounted to sit slightly off the wall. This 'floating' effect creates physical depth; as the light in your room changes throughout the day, the art casts shifting shadows that make the sacred words appear to have a living, moving presence.

Every piece is treated with high-luster, industrial-grade coatings—typically in brushed gold, polished silver, or matte black. These finishes are anti-tarnish and moisture-resistant, meaning they won't dull or corrode over time, even in humid environments. It is designed to be a permanent, heirloom-quality focal point.

Preserving the luster is very simple: a light dusting with a dry, soft microfiber cloth is all that is required. We recommend avoiding wet wipes or chemical cleaners, as the specialized 3D finish is engineered to stay vibrant with minimal, dry maintenance.

Gifting Surah Al-Alaq is a gesture of profound respect for someone’s intellectual journey. It is a prestigious choice for graduations, board exams, or the opening of a new office, as it offers the recipient a permanent source of inspiration and a reminder of the Divine origin of all knowledge.

Yes. The art is engineered for a seamless look, featuring a hidden hanging mechanism on the reverse side. This allows the piece to be mounted securely with a single nail or screw while maintaining a clean, hardware-free aesthetic that lets the calligraphy stand out as the star of the wall.

Our master designers in Turkey meticulously verify every vowel and 'harakat' (diacritical mark) to ensure 100% calligraphic accuracy. We bridge centuries of Ottoman calligraphic heritage with modern production standards to deliver a piece that is as spiritually authentic as it is artistically superior.

The screws in the metal wall art are for the hanging bracket on the back and for the blind feet to provide a 3D view. Never attempt to remove them.

Metal products can be used outdoors, but are not recommended for direct rain, moisture or sunlight.

We do not recommend any chemical products. You can remove dust with a slightly damp cloth.
