Naad-e Ali

Calligraphy cut into the form of a lion

Naad-e Ali worked into a lion silhouette and cut from 1.5 mm powder-painted steel, standing 1.5 cm proud of the wall. Two sizes, 69 and 99 cm wide.

Three decisions before it ships

  1. Size

Two sizes, 69 and 99 cm wide, drawn to scale against a sofa below.

  2. Finish

Four finishes — matte gold, silver, copper or black.

  3. Hanging

Mark a level line and match the fixing to the wall — that is the whole job.

What is written on it

Naad-e Ali

The invocation set into the shape of a lion, so the script and the figure are one cut rather than one placed over the other.

Nade Aliyyan mazharal ajaaib, tajidhu awnan laka fi nawabih, kullu hammin wa ghammin sayanjali biwilayatika Ya Ali, Ya Ali, Ya Ali.

“Call upon Ali, whose miracles manifest. You will find him a helper in your difficulties. Every sorrow and grief will dissipate through your allegiance to him. O Ali, O Ali, O Ali!”

Size & scale

Measured against a sofa, not a photograph

Both are wider than they are tall but with real depth to the form, so they want a wall with room around them. Drawn below at true scale above a three-seat sofa.

Three-seat sofa · 200 cm (79 in) wide, 82 cm (32 in) high XL · 99 × 70 cm 39 × 27.6 in L · 69 × 49 cm 27.2 × 19.3 in
SizeWidth × height (in)Width × height (cm)Best for
L27.2 × 19.3″69 × 49 cmAbove a console, a sideboard, or a study wall
XL39 × 27.6″99 × 70 cmA living-room feature wall with clear space either side

Match it to the furniture, not the wall. A low horizontal piece looks right when it spans roughly two thirds of whatever sits beneath it. Run painter's tape to the full width first and look at it from where you normally sit.

Craft

The depth is structural, not printed

The lion and the calligraphy are one continuous cut, so the wall shows through both. That is what keeps the figure readable rather than turning it into a solid block.

  • Letterforms cut clean through, so the wall color becomes part of the artwork
  • Electrostatic powder coating, baked on for a hard, even surface
  • No odour and no harmful substances

A coating that is baked, not sprayed. Powder is applied electrostatically and then cured, which gives a harder and more even surface than a sprayed paint and holds its color without yellowing.

Finishes

The finishes

Four finishes, each changing how much the cut edge catches the light.

Naad-e Ali lion design metal wall art in matte gold

Matte Gold

Powder coated. Warmth without shine, which suits a room lit mostly by lamps rather than daylight.

Naad-e Ali lion design metal wall art in matte silver

Matte Silver

Powder coated. Cool and quiet, and the easiest to place in a room that already has chrome or glass in it.

Naad-e Ali lion design metal wall art in matte copper

Matte Copper

Powder coated. The warmest of the matte finishes, and the one that reads best against green, clay or deep neutral walls.

Naad-e Ali lion design metal wall art in black

Black

The sharpest contrast of the set against a pale wall, and the one that reads most clearly from across a room.

Hanging it

Get the line level and the rest follows

A wide, detailed silhouette shows a tilt more than a plain rectangle does, so mark a line rather than judging by eye.

  1. Measure to the fixing first

Set it face up and measure from the left edge to each fixing point, so the wall marks come from the piece rather than from guesswork.

  2. Pencil one level line

A low, wide piece shows every degree of tilt, so mark a light horizontal line and put every fixing on it.

  3. Tape the width, then hang

Painter's tape to the full width lets you check the position from across the room before drilling.

Where it goes

Where it goes

Above the sofa

The wall this was designed for, spanning roughly two thirds of the seat beneath it.

Dining and console walls

A long, low piece sits naturally over a sideboard or a dining table, where a tall piece would crowd the ceiling.

Entryway and hallway

Cut work keeps a corridor from feeling closed in, because the wall reads through the letterforms.

Care

Keeping it as it arrived

Dry cloth only

A soft, dry cloth along the length of the script. A baked powder coat is harder than sprayed paint and takes dusting well.

No solvents

Alcohol, glass cleaner and polish will dull a matte surface. If a mark will not lift dry, use a barely damp cloth and dry it at once.

Damp resistant

The powder coat handles humidity better than a painted finish. Give it an indoor wall away from a bathroom or a kitchen extractor.

Choose your size and finish

Two sizes, and the finish is the rest of the decision. Tape the width on the wall first — it is the only measurement that matters.
