The Hadith of Mercy

Be merciful to those on the earth

The Hadith of Mercy cut from 1.5–2 mm metal, standing 1.5 cm off the wall. Two lengths, 69 and 99 cm, in black, gold, silver or copper.

Three decisions before it ships

  1. Size

Two lengths, 69 or 99 cm wide, drawn to scale against a sofa below.

  2. Finish

Four colors — black, gold, silver or copper.

  3. Hanging

Hanging tools are included, and one nail through the bracket carries it.

What is written on it

The hadith in full

The merciful will be shown mercy by the Most Merciful. Be merciful to those on the earth, and the One in the heavens will have mercy upon you. A hadith about conduct rather than belief — which is why it suits a study or an office.

(عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عَمْرٍو قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ)

“The merciful will be shown mercy by the Most Merciful. Be merciful to those on the earth, and the One in the heavens will have mercy upon you.”

Reported from Abdullah ibn Amr

Size & scale

Measured against a sofa, not a photograph

Both sizes are around four times wider than they are tall, so the constraint is the clear run of wall. They are drawn below at true scale above a three-seat sofa.

Three-seat sofa · 200 cm (79 in) wide, 82 cm (32 in) high XL · 99 × 24 cm 39 × 9.4 in L · 69 × 17 cm 27.2 × 6.7 in
SizeWidth × height (in)Width × height (cm)Best for
L27.2 × 6.7″69 × 17 cmAbove a desk, a console, or a two-seat sofa
XL39 × 9.4″99 × 24 cmA study or living-room feature wall, above a sideboard

Match it to the furniture, not the wall. A low horizontal piece looks right when it spans roughly two thirds of whatever sits beneath it. Run painter's tape to the full width first and look at it from where you normally sit.

Craft

The depth is structural, not printed

The letterforms are cut clean through 1.5–2 mm metal, so the wall color shows between them. Mounted 1.5 cm proud, the gap throws a shadow that moves through the day.

  • Cut from metal, then held 1.5 cm clear of the wall
  • Letterforms cut clean through, so the wall color becomes part of the artwork
  • Cut edges left clean through the fine strokes of the script
  • The weight and the edge of real metal rather than a printed panel

Why the cut matters. Because the script is cut out of the sheet rather than printed onto it, the wall behind becomes part of the artwork and the piece changes with the light in the room through the day.

Hanging it

One nail, and one level line

A narrow band shows a tilt more than a deep piece does, so mark the line rather than judging it by eye.

  1. Lay it down and measure to the bracket

Set it face up and measure from the left edge to the bracket. That single number is the whole job.

  2. Pencil one level line

Mark a light horizontal line at bracket height, centered on the furniture below rather than on the wall as a whole.

  3. Tape the width, then hang

Painter's tape to the full width shows you the position from across the room. Hang it and check it against the line.

Where it goes

Where it goes

A study or a home office

A hadith about how you treat people belongs on the wall you work at.

Above a console or a sideboard

A long, low piece spans a run of furniture without crowding the ceiling.

A quiet hallway

Read on the way past rather than sat in front of, which suits a line this short.

Care

Keeping it as it arrived

Dry cloth only

A soft, dry cloth along the length of the script. Nothing abrasive.

No cleaners

Alcohol, glass cleaner and polish will mark a finished metal surface. A barely damp cloth, dried at once, is enough.

Away from damp

An indoor piece. Keep it off bathroom walls and away from a kitchen extractor.

Choose your size and finish

Two sizes, and the finish is the rest of the decision. Tape the width on the wall first — it is the only measurement that matters.
