Hematite beads

A tasbih strung for daily counting

Hematite beads at 8 mm each, strung on a single cord for tasbeeh and dhikr.

Two decisions before it ships

  1. Size

Beads at 8 mm each — sized for the grip rather than for the look.

  2. In use

Strung on one cord, and it arrives ready to use.

Craft

Natural material, strung by the strand

Hematite is dense and metallic-dark, so a hematite strand is noticeably heavier in the hand than stone of the same size.

  • Hematite, so no two strands are identical
  • Strung on a single cord rated for daily use
  • Beads sized for the grip rather than for the look
  • Finished by the strand, so the beads match each other

Why the bead size matters. A tasbih is counted by feel, not by sight. A bead too small slips past the thumb and the count goes wrong; too large and the strand gets bulky in a pocket. Six to eight millimeters is the range that stays countable without becoming a handful.

Using it

Counting on it

A tasbih is counted by feel. Three small habits are what keep the count right when your eyes are elsewhere.

  1. Find the thumb position first

Hold the strand so it hangs over the index finger with the thumb resting on the first bead. Everything after that is one motion.

  2. Push, do not pull

Move each bead away from you with the thumb rather than dragging the cord. That is what keeps the count reliable when you are not watching.

  3. Let the marker do the counting

Work to the divider or the head bead and start again. Counting the beads themselves is what breaks concentration.

Where it lives

Where it lives

A coat or trouser pocket

Where most strands actually live. Coiled rather than folded, so the cord is not stressed at one point.

The car

Hung on the mirror or kept in the door pocket, for the part of the day that is otherwise dead time.

A bedside table

Within reach for the dhikr said before sleep, which is the habit most people are trying to keep.

Care

Keeping it as it arrived

Keep it dry

Wipe with a soft, dry cloth. Stone and wood both mark where water sits, and a wet cord stretches.

No oils or cleaners

Nothing on the beads and nothing on the cord. Skin oil is what gives a well-used strand its patina; anything else just dulls it.

Store it loose

Coiled in a pocket or a box rather than hung on a hook, which puts all the weight on one point of the cord.
