Ayat al-Kursi · Al-Baqarah 255

Acrylic script layered over MDF wood

Ayat al-Kursi cut in acrylic and layered over an MDF wood circle, 6 mm deep. Five sizes, from 65 cm up to a full 180 cm tall.

Three decisions before it ships

  1. Size

Five sizes, 65 to 180 cm tall. The drawing below is scaled to fit the largest, with the sofa scaled to match.

  2. Finish

Nine combinations across shiny gold, shiny silver and black, chosen for the script and the surround separately.

  3. Hanging

A layered panel that ships ready to hang; on a circle the center point is what matters.

What is written on it

Ayat al-Kursi, in full

The complete verse, not an excerpt. A circle lets the script run continuously, with no corner to break the line.

“Allah! There is no deity except Him, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer of [all] existence. Neither drowsiness overtakes Him nor sleep. To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. Who is it that can intercede with Him except by His permission? He knows what is [presently] before them and what will be after them, and they encompass not a thing of His knowledge except for what He wills. His Kursi extends over the heavens and the earth, and their preservation tires Him not. And He is the Most High, the Most Great.”

Surah Al-Baqarah 2:255

Size & scale

The largest size is taller than a doorway

At 180 cm the biggest is a wall in its own right. Because it will not fit the frame at true size, the whole drawing below — sofa included — is scaled down together so the comparison still holds.

Three-seat sofa · 200 cm (79 in) wide, 82 cm (32 in) high 3XL · 135 × 180 cm 53.1 × 70.9 in 2XL · 112.5 × 150 cm 44.3 × 59.1 in XL · 90 × 120 cm 35.4 × 47.2 in L · 60 × 80 cm 23.6 × 31.5 in M · 50 × 65 cm 19.7 × 25.6 in
SizeWidth × height (in)Width × height (cm)Best for
M19.7 × 25.6″50 × 65 cmAbove a console or a two-seat sofa
L23.6 × 31.5″60 × 80 cmA main living-room wall
XL35.4 × 47.2″90 × 120 cmA stairwell or a double-height entry
2XL44.3 × 59.1″112.5 × 150 cmA full feature wall, read from across an open-plan room
3XL53.1 × 70.9″135 × 180 cmAn architectural wall — measure the ceiling height first

Mark it before you choose. Run painter's tape on the wall to the outer width and height, then stand back to where you normally sit and look at it from there. On a tall piece, hang it with its middle around 150 cm from the floor and the drop does the rest.

Craft

Two materials, so the script separates

The calligraphy is cut from acrylic and layered onto an MDF wood circle. At 6 mm the panel has the depth to hold that separation from any angle, and the two materials catch light differently.

  • Cut and layered so the calligraphy sits forward of the panel behind it
  • Wood and acrylic combined, each carrying its own depth and grain
  • Edges finished clean, with no visible fixings on the face

On wood and acrylic. Layering the two materials is what gives the piece its depth: the acrylic carries the line of the calligraphy and the wood behind it gives the panel warmth and weight.

Finishes

The finishes

Six of the nine set one tone for the script and another for the surround; the other three run a single tone throughout.

Both parts in gold. The warmest of the four, and the one that reads best against a dark or deep-toned wall.

Both parts in silver. Cooler and quieter, and the easiest to place in a room that already has chrome or glass in it.

One tone throughout, in black — it holds the most uniform surface of the set.

Hanging it

Center it, and the circle does the rest

A circle has no top edge to level against, so the center point is the whole job — and on the larger sizes it is worth a second pair of hands.

  1. Find the center, not the top

A circle has no top edge to level against, so mark the center point on the wall — about 150 cm up — and hang to that.

  2. Tape the diameter first

Painter's tape across the full width shows how much wall it will take. A circle reads larger than a rectangle of the same width.

  3. Hang and step back

Hook it on, then walk to the far side of the room. A circle sitting slightly off-center shows more than a rectangle hung slightly crooked.

  • Ships ready to hang; no frame, glass or backing board to fit
  • Packed with corner protection for transit

Where it goes

Where it goes

Above a console or mantel

A circle centers on a wall without needing clear width either side, which is what makes it work over furniture.

The prayer corner

It sits at standing eye level and holds its shape when seen from an angle.

Stairwell and entry

A round piece carries a tall, awkward wall better than a rectangle, because there is no edge to fight the staircase line.

Care

Keeping it as it arrived

Dry cloth only

A soft, dry cloth. Wood and acrylic both mark with abrasives, so nothing scouring.

No solvents

Alcohol and glass cleaner will haze acrylic. If a mark will not lift dry, use a barely damp cloth and dry it at once.

Away from damp and direct sun

Wood moves with humidity and acrylic can warm in direct sunlight, so give it an interior wall out of the midday light.

Choose your size and finish

Sizes to suit the wall, and the finish is the rest of the decision. Tape the diameter first — it is the only measurement that matters.
