A vertical mabkhara that pairs a solid wood base with an arched metal screen, crowned with a crescent. Choose one of three Islamic geometric patterns and one of five metal finishes.

The 10 x 10 cm wooden base takes up little room on a side table, shelf or console, while the 21 cm metal back shields the coal from drafts and sends the smoke upward, away from your wall. Use it with bakhoor, oud wood, resin incense or incense cones.

Mabkhara on a wooden base

A tall metal screen for the incense corner

A natural wood block, 10 × 10 cm, carries an arched metal screen 21 cm tall with a crescent at the top. The screen comes in three Islamic geometric patterns and five painted finishes, so the same piece can be quiet or festive.

Three decisions before it ships

  1. Pattern

Hexagon Lattice, Star Rosette or Eight-Point Star — the shape and size are the same in all three.

  2. Finish

Five colors for the metal screen: gold, black, white, silver or copper. The base is natural wood in every one.

  3. In use

Charcoal with bakhoor, oud or resin, or a simple incense cone — it stands on its own base, nothing to fix.

The patterns

Three screens, one silhouette

Each screen is cut in a different Islamic geometric pattern under the same arch and crescent. Shown here in gold; every pattern comes in all five finishes.

Hexagon Lattice pattern mabkhara in gold on its wooden base
Hexagon LatticeA fine, repeating grid of hexagons, light and even.
Star Rosette pattern mabkhara in gold on its wooden base
Star RosetteBold interlacing stars that meet in a central rosette.
Eight-Point Star pattern mabkhara in gold on its wooden base
Eight-Point StarA classic lattice of eight-pointed stars, the most traditional.

Size in the hand

Made in one size, 10 × 21 cm

One size only: a 10 × 10 cm base and a metal back 21 cm tall. It is drawn below at true scale against a dining table, which is the honest way to judge it.

Dining table · 120 cm (47 in) wide, 75 cm (30 in) high One size · 10 × 21 cm 4 × 8.3 in
SizeBase × height (in)Base × height (cm)Best for
One size4 × 8.3″10 × 21 cmA side table, a console or a deep shelf

Judge it by depth. The base is 10 cm front to back, so any surface that deep will hold it; the screen rises behind the burning point rather than around it.

Materials

Craft

Wood below, metal behind the smoke

The wood block gives the piece its weight and warmth; the metal screen stands behind the burning point, so the smoke rises in front of the pattern and away from the wall.

  • A solid natural wood base, 10 × 10 cm
  • A painted metal screen, 21 cm tall, in one of three patterns
  • The screen shields the coal from drafts so it burns evenly
  • Every piece of wood has its own grain, so no two bases look exactly alike

Finishes

Five colors for the screen

The pattern is the same in every finish; what changes is how it reads against the wood and the room. Shown here in Hexagon Lattice.

Wooden base mabkhara with the metal screen in gold

Gold

Warm against the wood grain, and the finish that reads most festive at Ramadan.

Wooden base mabkhara with the metal screen in black

Black

The pattern turns graphic, close to a silhouette, and suits a modern room.

Wooden base mabkhara with the metal screen in white

White

Quiet and light, it lets the wood base do the talking.

Wooden base mabkhara with the metal screen in silver

Silver

A cool metallic tone that sits well beside glass and gray stone.

Wooden base mabkhara with the metal screen in copper

Copper

The warmest of the five, closest in tone to the wood itself.

Using it

Lighting the incense

Set it down where it will stay before you light anything, so the hot part is never carried.

  1. Place it first

A flat, stable surface, with the screen toward the wall and clear space above it.

  2. Light the coal or the cone

Charcoal with bakhoor, oud or resin, or an incense cone on its own. The screen keeps a draft from fanning it.

  3. Let it cool before moving

Wait until the coal is out and the piece is cool to the touch, then tip out the ash.

  • Never leave burning incense unattended
  • Keep it away from curtains and out of reach of children

Where it lives

Where it goes

A side table by the sofa

Where guests sit, which is where a scent is meant to reach — the classic place for a mabkhara.

A console by the door

The first thing a guest passes, and a fitting place to welcome them with bakhoor.

A deep shelf or a mantel

It needs 10 cm of depth and room above it, which a shelf has and a crowded table may not.

Care

Keeping it as it arrived

Dry cloth for the metal

Wipe the screen with a soft, dry cloth. Household cleaners can dull a painted finish.

Keep the wood dry

Wipe up spills at once and keep the base off wet surfaces.

Clear the ash after each use

Once it is cool, tip out the ash so residue does not build up on the base.
