Five designs, cut in metal

Metal cutlery holders in five designs

The Bismillah, Saha w Afia or Ramadan Kareem in Arabic calligraphy, or a mosque dome or crescent moon with no calligraphy, each cut from painted metal. The Bismillah is 12 × 3 cm, the other four designs 10 × 10 cm. It comes as a set of 6 or 12 of the same piece — one per place at the table.

Four decisions before it ships

  1. Design

Bismillah, Saha w Afia, Ramadan Kareem, Mosque Dome or Crescent Moon. In every design the knife and fork sit in it at each place, the cut face toward the guest.

  2. Size

Two sizes: 12 × 3 cm for the Bismillah, 10 × 10 cm for the other four designs — that is one piece, not the set.

  3. Finish

Five finishes. The piece is the same in each; what changes is how much it lifts off the cloth.

  4. How many

It comes as a set of 6 or 12 of the same piece — one per place at the table.

Size on the table

How big is one of them?

12 × 3 cm for the Bismillah, 10 × 10 cm for the other designs. Both are drawn below beside a coffee mug at the same scale, one over the other — a set is this, six or twelve times over.

Coffee mug · 9 cm (3.5 in) wide, 10 cm (3.9 in) high Other four designs 10 × 10 cm · 3.9 × 3.9 in Bismillah 12 × 3 cm · 4.7 × 1.2 in
SizeWidth × height (in)Width × height (cm)Designs
Long4.7 × 1.2″12 × 3 cmBismillah
Square3.9 × 3.9″10 × 10 cmSaha w Afia, Ramadan Kareem, Mosque Dome, Crescent Moon

The size is one piece. Every figure here is a single piece. A set of 6 or 12 is that piece repeated, so the space it takes on the table is this multiplied by the number of places you are laying.

Craft

How it is made

The knife and fork sit in it at each place, the cut face toward the guest.

  • Cut from sheet metal and painted in the color shown
  • Cut right through, so the pattern reads as light rather than as print
  • Heavy enough to stay where it is put on a laid table

On the weight. Metal is the reason a table piece this small does not travel across the cloth every time someone reaches past it. It is also why the cut edges hold their shape through a season of washing up.

Designs

The designs

Five designs, each in gold, black, white, silver or copper.

The Bismillah metal cutlery holder in gold

The Crescent Moon metal cutlery holder in gold

Crescent Moon

The crescent of the new month, with no calligraphy, 10 × 10 cm.

Finishes

The finishes

Five finishes, available in every design.

bismillah, cut in metal in gold

Gold

Warm and bright, and the one that reads best against off-white and cream walls.

bismillah, cut in metal in black

Black

The sharpest contrast of the set against a pale wall, and the one that reads most clearly from across a room.

bismillah, cut in metal in white

White

Reads quietly, and lets the cut line of the calligraphy do the work rather than the color.

bismillah, cut in metal in silver

Silver

Cool and quiet, and the easiest to place in a room that already has chrome or glass in it.

bismillah, cut in metal in copper

Copper

The warmest of the set, and the one that reads best against green, clay or deep neutral walls.

Using it

Setting the table

A table set for iftar is laid once and cleared every night for a month. These three habits are what survive that.

  1. Lay it once, before the first night

Set one at every place and leave the setting alone for the month. The point of a set is that the table is already laid when the adhan comes.

  2. Clear it with the cloth, not the plates

It goes back in its box rather than into the washing-up bowl. That single habit is most of why a set survives a whole Ramadan.

  3. Turn the cut face toward the guest

The piece is cut to be seen from the seat, not from the head of the table.

  • Packed for transit

Where it lives

Where it ends up

The iftar table, every night of Ramadan

This is what it is for: one at each place, from the first night to the last.

Eid, and the table after it

The same setting carries over — the greeting changes, the table does not.

Put away between years

Boxed and in a cupboard for eleven months. It is worth keeping the box it came in for exactly that.

Care

Keeping it as it arrived

A dry cloth, nothing wet

Water sits in a cut edge. Dry it at once if it is wiped damp.

No cleaners

Alcohol and glass cleaner both attack a painted metal surface.

Away from the dishwasher

A table piece rather than a dish. Heat and detergent are what take a painted finish off.
