A crescent and a star

The crescent and star, in three sizes

The crescent and star, in three sizes, in three sizes, 52 to 102 cm across.

Four decisions before it ships

  1. What it is

The crescent and star, in three sizes. It stands where it is seen from across the room rather than up close.

  2. Size

Made in three sizes, 52 to 102 cm across.

  3. Finish

Two finishes. The shape is the same in each; what changes is how much it stands out against what is behind it.

  4. In use

It stands where it is seen from across the room rather than up close.

Size on the table

How big is it, really?

Three sizes, 52 to 102 cm across. They are drawn below at one scale, nested, beside a chair.

Standard chair · 45 cm (18 in) wide, 90 cm (35 in) high L · 102 × 86 cm 40.2 × 33.9 in M · 67 × 57 cm 26.4 × 22.4 in S · 52 × 44 cm 20.5 × 17.3 in
SizeWidth × height (in)Width × height (cm)Best for
S20.5 × 17.3″52 × 44 cmThe smallest of them — it reads close up, on a shelf or a side table
M26.4 × 22.4″67 × 57 cmThe middle one, which is the size most rooms take
L40.2 × 33.9″102 × 86 cmLarge enough to be the thing you see first on entering

Measured against a chair, not a table. The chair in the drawing is a standard 45 cm wide and 90 cm high, and the piece stands next to it at the same scale. Something this size lives on the floor rather than on a surface, which is why a chair is the comparison.

Materials

Craft

How it is made

Cut from sheet, so the shapes are the material rather than a pattern laid on it.

  • Letterforms cut clean through, so what is behind the piece shows between them
  • Cut edges left clean through the fine strokes of the script
  • The weight and the edge of real metal rather than a moulded copy

Why the cut matters. Because the shapes are cut out of the sheet rather than printed onto it, the piece has a front and a back that both read — and what it stands in front of becomes part of it. Turn it toward the light and the cut-through pattern lands on the surface behind it.

Finishes

The finishes

Two finishes of the same cut piece.

a crescent and a star in gold

Gold

Warm and bright, and the one that reads best against off-white and cream walls.

a crescent and a star in black

Black

The sharpest contrast of the set against a pale wall, and the one that reads most clearly from across a room.

Using it

Setting it down

It stands where it is seen from across the room rather than up close.

  1. Set it on something that will not flex

Cut sheet is heavier than it looks, and a piece this size wants a fixed shelf or a table rather than a stack of books.

  2. Turn the cut face toward the room

The shapes are cut right through, so the piece reads from the side the light comes from. Turn it until the gaps carry the light.

  3. Leave it room to cast a shadow

A few centimeters off the wall behind it and the cut-through pattern lands on that wall as well — which is half of what a cut piece is for.

  • Packed for transit

Where it lives

Where it ends up

A console or a sideboard

The run of furniture guests pass, where a piece this size is seen at standing height rather than looked up at.

A shelf or a bookcase ledge

It needs depth rather than width, which is what a shelf has and a wall does not.

A desk or a study table

Close enough to be read at arm’s length, which is the distance the detail is cut for.

Care

Keeping it as it arrived

Dry cloth only

A soft, dry cloth along the length of the script. Nothing abrasive.

No cleaners

Alcohol, glass cleaner and polish will mark a finished metal surface. A barely damp cloth, dried at once, is enough.

Away from damp

An indoor piece. Keep it off a bathroom shelf and away from a kitchen extractor.
