Mark it before you choose. Run painter's tape on the wall to the outer width and height, then stand back to where you normally sit and look at it from there. On a tall piece, hang it with its middle around 150 cm from the floor and the drop does the rest.

Craft

Acrylic over wood, with the movement behind it

The body is MDF with an acrylic layer over it, 7 mm in total, and the movement is fitted behind the face. The gloss comes from the acrylic rather than from a coat of varnish.

On the gloss. The acrylic layer over the wood is where the shine comes from, and it is what makes the numerals read against the body. It also shows a fingerprint, so the face is best left untouched.

The face and the movement are the same in every one; the finish is what decides whether the hands read against the wall behind or against the piece itself. The darker tones hold their contrast in a bright room; the metallics catch the light in a dim one.

One nail, and set the time first

Everything about hanging a clock is easy except reaching behind it afterwards, which is what the three steps are about.

  1. Pick the wall by where you look for the time

    A clock is read from a doorway or a seat, not admired from across the room. Stand where you will actually look at it and choose that wall.

  2. One nail at hanger height

    Measure from the top of the face to the fixing on the back, mark a light pencil line at that height, and set one nail on it.

  3. Set the hands before you hang it

    Set the time with the piece face up on a table, then hang it. Reaching behind a mounted clock is how a hand gets bent.
