The ladder runs from 40 × 35 cm up to 90 × 78 cm. All three are drawn below at true scale above a three-seat sofa, which matters more on a map than on a rectangle — the outline leaves air around it.

Match it to the furniture, not the wall. A low horizontal piece looks right when it spans roughly two thirds of whatever sits beneath it. Run painter's tape to the full width first and look at it from where you normally sit.

Craft

The map is cut to the outline of the country and built up from three separate boards of MDF, 15 mm thick in total, so the shape stands off the wall rather than sitting flat against it. The tones are the boards’ own — there is no coat of paint over the top.

On the tape. Double-sided tape carries a cut panel of this weight without a nail, and comes off the wall with a hairdryer rather than a filler and a brush — which is what makes it the right fixing for a rented wall.

Hanging it

Tape, not a nail

A map goes up by its outline rather than a center line, which is a different job from hanging a rectangle. Three steps.

  1. Tape the outline on the wall first

    A country is a shape, not a rectangle, so run painter's tape around its extremes and live with it for a day. It is the only way to see whether the wall takes it.

  2. Clean the wall where the tape goes

    Double-sided tape holds on a dry, dust-free surface and lets go on a dusty one. Wipe the spots, let them dry, then press.

  3. Press from the middle outward

    Put the tapes on vertically for a stronger hold, line the piece up, then press from the center out so no corner is left holding the whole weight.

A soft, dry cloth. Nothing scouring, and nothing wet.

No solvents

Alcohol and glass cleaner mark a board finish. If a mark will not come off dry, use a barely damp cloth and dry it at once.

Away from damp and direct sun

Wood moves with humidity, so give it an interior wall out of the midday light and away from a bathroom.
