How to Choose a Prayer Rug: Size, Thickness, Fabric and Care
A prayer rug should be 115–130 cm long and at least your toe-to-forehead length. Here's how to match thickness to your floor, pick a fabric, and store it.

A prayer rug should be 115–130 cm long and 65–78 cm wide (45–51 × 26–31″), and at least as long as your own toe-to-forehead measurement. Once the length fits, two choices remain: a thickness that suits the floor it will lie on, and a fabric that suits how often it travels. Pattern and color come last.
This guide works through those decisions in order, using the measurements of the rugs we stock and what a year of our own orders shows people actually buy.
Fit the length to your body, not to the room
Width rarely decides anything: every rug we sell is 65 cm (25.6″) or wider, which clears the shoulders of almost any adult. Length is the number to get right, and it depends on you rather than on the space.
The quickest check takes two minutes. Kneel on the floor where the rug will go, bend fully forward until your forehead touches the floor, and have someone mark the floor at your forehead and at the tips of your toes. Measure between the marks, then choose a rug at least that long:
- Up to 115 cm (45″): every rug below fits, including the slim travel size.
- 116–122 cm (46–48″): the standard 122 cm rug or longer.
- Over 122 cm: the 126 cm or 130 cm rug, so your toes and forehead both land on fabric.
| Rug size | Fabric (as listed) | Listed thickness | Listed weight | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 115 × 68 cm · 45.3 × 26.8″ | Cotton–polyester blend | Slim (no mm figure listed) | — | Work, travel, boxed gift sets |
| 122 × 68 cm · 48 × 26.8″ | Soft acrylic pile | Not listed | 1 kg | Everyday use at home; the widest choice of designs |
| 126 × 65 cm · 49.6 × 25.6″ | Cotton–polyester blend | 5 mm | 1.5 kg | Longer measurement, hard floors |
| 130 × 78 cm · 51.2 × 30.7″ | Cotton–polyester blend | 7 mm | 1.5–1.8 kg | Tallest users, hard floors, extra elbow room |
If your measurement comes out long, the thick 130 cm rug, offered in four patterns is the longest and widest we carry.
Match the thickness to the floor underneath
Thickness is about what the rug sits on. A rug adds very little to a carpeted floor, but on a hard floor it is the only thing between your knees and the boards.
| Floor | What works |
|---|---|
| Wall-to-wall carpet | Any standard rug; the carpet does the cushioning |
| Hardwood, laminate, vinyl | A 5–7 mm rug, or a standard rug over a thin non-slip rug pad |
| Tile or stone | The thickest rug you are happy to fold, plus a pad in winter — these floors stay cold |
| Office, car, suitcase | The slim 115 cm cotton-blend rug, which folds smallest |
Two practical notes. First, on any smooth floor a rug can creep when you shift your weight; a thin pad cut slightly smaller than the rug fixes that without making it bulkier to put away. Second, thicker is not automatically better: a deep rug on top of soft carpet can feel spongy underfoot, and it takes up more room in a drawer or holder.
For a cushioned option that still lies flat, this plain cream rug at 5 mm is the middle ground between our slim and thick rugs.
Decide between acrylic pile and a cotton blend
The rugs we stock come in two fabric families, and each behaves differently over a year of daily use.
- Acrylic pile (our 122 × 68 cm rugs) is listed as soft and cushioned. At 1 kg it is light enough to fold and carry, and it is where the patterned designs live — floral, geometric, medallion and tile motifs in more than twenty colorways.
- Cotton–polyester blends (our 115, 126 and 130 cm rugs) split by thickness. The slim 115 cm version is designed to fold small and travel; the 5 mm and 7 mm versions trade some of that portability for cushioning.
Some prayer rugs carry an arch at the head end. That outline is the mihrab, the niche form from mosque architecture; if you are curious why it appears on rugs, panels and doorways alike, our piece on what a mihrab is and how the form moved into the home traces it.
Care, whichever you choose: shake the rug out regularly, vacuum on low suction without a rotating brush, spot-clean marks with a damp cloth and mild soap, and dry it flat away from direct heat. Check the care label before putting any rug in a washing machine.
See what a year of our orders points to
Across the twelve months to early October 2026, our store sold 138 prayer rugs. A few patterns stand out:
- 101 of the 138 (73%) were the 122 × 68 cm acrylic rugs. The standard size, not the largest, is what most people choose.
- The three best-selling designs all have light grounds: a white rug with a classic blue ornate border (16), a white-and-gold patterned rug (11) and a white-and-blue diamond design (9). Together they account for 36 of the 101.
- The 5 mm and 7 mm cushioned rugs sold 9 units between them, so thickness is a minority need — but a real one for people on hard floors.
- The less obvious figure: our wooden rug holder and stand sold 90 units in the same period, roughly two for every three rugs. Plenty of people already own a rug; what they lack is somewhere to keep it.
The practical reading: if you are unsure, the standard 122 cm acrylic rug is the safe default, and light grounds are what most buyers prefer. Just be aware that a pale rug shows lint and dust sooner than a dark one, so it rewards a regular shake-out.
Give the rug somewhere to live between uses
A rug that is left on the floor gathers dust and gets walked on; one that is folded into a drawer develops hard creases. The habit that keeps a rug looking new is a fixed place to hang or fold it.
- Fold along the same lines every time — lengthwise in half, then in thirds — so the rug keeps the same few folds instead of collecting new ones.
- Hang it if you can. Draped over a rail, a rug airs out and lies flat again the next time.
- Keep it beside the space you use, so putting it away takes seconds rather than a trip to another room.
That last point is why the holder sells so well. This wooden rug holder with a built-in book stand measures 30 × 66 × 89 cm (11.8 × 26 × 35″), hangs rugs on two solid oak rails, and keeps them off the floor beside a prayer corner. If you are planning the whole corner rather than just the rug, our guide to setting up a prayer corner at home covers the floor space, wall piece and lighting.
Pick a gift rug that suits almost anyone
A rug is a personal item, so as a gift the safest choices are the ones that work for most people:
- Choose the standard length unless you know the recipient is very tall.
- Choose a boxed set if presentation matters. Our 115 × 68 cm sets, such as this cream rug set with prayer beads, arrive with matching accessories, and the sets are offered in packs of 1, 2, 5 or 10 for families or groups.
- Choose a cushioned rug for an older relative or anyone who mentions their knees.
- Allow time: orders are prepared for dispatch within 1–5 business days, plus transit to the recipient.
Run six checks before you order
- Measure your toe-to-forehead length and choose a rug at least that long
- Check the floor: carpet, hard floor, or tile and stone
- Pick a thickness to match — slim, standard, 5 mm or 7 mm
- Decide whether the rug stays at home or travels with you
- Choose a ground color you are happy to shake out often (light) or to forget about (dark)
- Decide where it will hang or fold when not in use
Every rug in this guide sits in one place: our prayer rug collection lists the size, fabric and, where available, thickness of each rug, and the wider prayer room collection adds the holders, stands and wall pieces that go around it.
A note on scope: this guide covers size, materials, care and storage only. Questions of religious practice — including any requirements for a prayer surface — are matters on which scholars differ, and we would encourage you to consult your own local scholar rather than take guidance from a retailer.
Sizes, fabrics, thicknesses and weights are taken from our own product listings; order figures are from our own store data for the twelve months to early October 2026. This article was prepared with AI assistance and reviewed by a member of the IWA Concept team before publication.
