Mihrab arch, chenille jacquard

A solid field inside an arched mihrab frame

A solid-color field inside an arched mihrab frame, with a star medallion and a floral border — woven in chenille jacquard at 70 × 120 cm, with fringes on both short edges. Seven colors, each named for its field.

Three decisions before it ships

  1. Size

One size, 70 × 120 cm (27.6 × 47.2 in) — drawn to scale beside an adult below.

  2. Color

Seven colors. Each is the color of the field; the arch, the star and the border are the same design on all seven.

  3. Laying it out

The arch is the head of the rug: lay it with the arched end toward the qibla.

Size on the floor

Measured against a standing adult

One size, 70 × 120 cm. It is drawn below at true scale beside a 170 cm adult, so the length reads against a person rather than as a number.

Adult · 45 cm (18 in) wide, 170 cm (67 in) high One size · 70 × 120 cm 27.6 × 47.2 in
SizeWidth × height (in)Width × height (cm)Best for
One size27.6 × 47.2″70 × 120 cmOne person at prayer

Try it on the floor first. The 120 cm is the length you pray along, from your feet to the arch; the 70 cm runs across, shoulder to shoulder. Tape the outline on the floor of the corner you have in mind before you order.

Craft

Woven, not printed

Chenille jacquard: the arch, the star medallion and the floral border are all formed in the weave.

  • An arched mihrab frame with a star medallion and a floral border, around a solid field
  • Chenille yarn on a jacquard weave: the design is made by the threads themselves, not printed onto the surface
  • Fringed along both short edges
  • A quilted backing, stitched in a diamond pattern

What jacquard means here. On a jacquard weave each motif is formed as the cloth is woven, thread by thread, so the pattern is part of the rug rather than a layer on top of it.

Colors

Using it

Laying it out

A prayer rug asks for very little. These are the three things worth getting right.

  1. Arch toward the qibla

The mihrab frame shows the way: lay the rug with the arched end away from you, toward the qibla, and the direction is set.

  2. Smooth out the fringe

Run a hand along each short end before you begin, so the fringe lies straight off the rug rather than tucked under it.

  3. Same spot, every time

A rug laid in one place becomes the prayer corner. Choose a spot out of the walkway, where nobody steps across it between prayers.

  • Quilted backing in a diamond pattern

Where it lives

Where it ends up

A prayer corner that stays set up

Laid out and left in one corner of a room, so there is nothing to fetch before each prayer.

A bedroom or a study

Beside the bed or in a quiet room, where a rug can stay down without being in anyone’s way.

As a gift

For Ramadan or Eid, a new home, or a return from Hajj or Umrah.
